The Productivity J-Curve: How Intangibles Complement General Purpose Technologies
نویسندگان
چکیده
General purpose technologies (GPTs) like AI enable and require significant complementary investments. These investments are often intangible poorly measured in national accounts. We develop a model that shows how this can lead to underestimation of productivity growth new GPTs early years and, later, when the benefits harvested, overestimation. call phenomenon Productivity J-curve. apply our method US data find adjusting for intangibles related computer hardware software yields TFP level is 15.9 percent higher than official measures by end 2017. General Purpose Technologies and the Industrial Revolution
Did innovations in core processes during the Industrial Revolution tend to generate innovations in downstream technologies? Here a theoretical model examines the effect of a political shock in a non-innovating society in which there is high potential willingness to cooperate. The result is regional specialization in the innovation process by degree of cooperation. Tests with a Poisson specifica...
متن کاملIntangibles, mismeasurement and the international productivity slowdown
We study if part of the recent international productivity slowdown can be ascribed to intangibles. Over the Great Recession both tangible and intangible investment fell, but intangible investment fell less and recovered much faster. This might a ect measured TFP growth via a combination of reduced spillovers (if any) from intangibles and mismeasurement of GDP. Using a 16 country dataset, and pr...
متن کاملGeneral Purpose Technologies and Energy Policy
We employ a general purpose technology model with endogenous stochastic growth to simulate the effects of different energy policy schemes. An R&D sector produces endogenous growth by developing radical and incremental technologies. These innovations result in blueprints for capital intermediates, which require raw capital and either carbon or noncarbon-based fuels. A carbon tax therefore affect...
متن کاملThe Dynamic Effects of General Purpose Technologies on Schumpeterian Growth
General purpose technologies (GPTs) are drastic innovations, such as electrification, the transistor, and the Internet, that are characterized by the pervasiveness in use, innovational complementarities, and technological dynamism. The transitional and long-run dynamic effects of a GPT are analyzed within a quality-ladders model of scale-invariant Schumpeterian growth. The diffusion path of a G...
متن کاملGeneral Purpose Technologies and Surges in Productivity: Historical Reflections on the Future of the ICT Revolution by
In this essay we reflect on the relevance of early twentieth century experience for understanding the more general phenomenon of recurring prolonged swings in the TFP growth rate in advanced industrial economies. Our discussion builds upon our recent re-examination of the marked acceleration of the pace of total factor productivity growth that occurred in U.S. manufacturing following World War ...
